Wankel, who succeeded Mr. Smith as president, had been Shubert’s co-chief executive officer with Mr. Smith from 2008 until June, when Mr. Smith retired and was named chairman emeritus. For much of his six-decade Shubert career, Mr. Smith was the protégé of the creative giants Gerald Schoenfeld, the chairman, and Bernard B. Jacobs, the president.
